Cyanobacteria

Everything You Need to Know
cyanobacteria-pond-algea-consultation.jpg

Cyanobacteria or otherwise called Blue Green Algae are gram negative photosynthetic bacteria found wordwide that can grow quickly when warm water combines with sunlight and nutrients like phosphorous and nitrogen.  These organisms have been on earth before the dinosaurs and still exist in modern day terrestrial and aquatic environments.  Exposure to these bacteria can be a health problem for you and your pets. Skin rashes, vomiting, headaches, and even death can occur from coming into contact with toxic cyanobacteria.

Our intention is not to reduce your enjoyment of having a pond but to share with you good information to minimize the chance of having cyanobacteria in your pond and if it does happen what steps to take to reduce nutrients that support it’s growth.

Some of the more common types of cyanobacteria are Dolichospermum, Microcystis, Ocillatoria, and Chrysosporum.  All of these can be found at times in freshwater ponds.

We can advise you regarding treatment options for cyanobacteria blooms in natural ponds, agricultural ponds or swimming ponds followed with a monitoring and testing protocol. It is important to protect yourself from cyanobacteria contact. Call us and we will talk on how to make your pond safe to enjoy.

Algae Problems in Ponds

Don't Let Algae Overtake Your Pond

Green filamentous algae can reduce your enjoyment of having a pond. Its naturally occurring and an essential part of the pond food chain.  When a supplement of nutrients like phosphorous, ammonia, and nitrate enter your pond, green algae takes advantage of this and grows rather quickly. Rather than treating the pond with aquatic chemicals which tends to make this problem even more complicated, we have a better process that directly competes for the same excessive nutrients available for algae production.  Our process is a safer, smarter way of making your pond more enjoyable
